ICC certified Structural welding and Bolting special inspector

Steve is an AWS Certified Welding inspector and ICC Structural Steel and Bolting special inspector.

To receive these certifications, an individual must demonstrate proficiency in interpreting the structural welding and bolting codes and implementing solutions based upon them. The exams rely heavily on the following references:

  • AISC Manual of Steel Construction
  • AISC code of standard building practice
  • AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code
  • AWS D1.5 Structural Welding Code- Bridges
  • AWS D1.4 Structural Welding Code Reinforcing Steel
  • AWS D1.3 Structural Welding Code Sheet Steel
  • AWS A2.4 Standard symbols for welding, brazing and NDT
  • ICBO Uniform Building Code
  • Steel Deck Institute Design Manual
  • Steel Joist Institute Standard Specifications
  • Research Council for Structural Connections Specification for Structural Joints using A325 and A490 bolts
  • National Bridge Inspection Standards for fracture critical members

Typically, the inspector will first examine the building plans to review areas of concern including welding details, steel framing details and material or fastener requirements. Observations are then made of the work in progress to compare the specifications to what is actually being done. These results are then reported to the owner of the project to give an objective, third party view of the quality process. Torque/tension testing of fasteners, welding inspection and welding procedure qualification/verification are often included in these observations. Additional testing may contain destructive or nondestructive testing of fasteners, welds and welding consumables.
